Join neighbors, merchants, and community leaders in their effort to build resilience and increase community self reliance in the event of a disaster. The model grew out of lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. The idea is to be able to build connections among residents, government agencies, non profits, faith-based organizations, schools, and businesses to create a better response post-crisis and establish “a HUB”.
This neighborhood HUB is intended be a network of community-serving organizations from any sector committed to “working everyday to advance the readiness of their institution, staff, clients, and neighbors” and also be “activated during times of stress, and to work collaboratively to protect the health and well being of all residents, especially the vulnerable.”
The Greater West Portal Neighborhood Association has received a grant to offer some free training for those who want to develop skills towards reaching this noble HUB goal.
